Museum of Archaeology is located in Almaty, it is the only museum in the Republic of Kazakhstan with such profile, and it takes a special place in the Kazakh museology.
The museum was opened in 1973 at the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR by the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan D.Kunaev.
The main idea of the museum was to create a center for storage and scientific study of archaeological materials that collected in the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In 2010, the Museum became a part of the "Gylym Ordasy" scientific complex. Today, it is priceless treasure of unique artifacts, preservation of ancient traditions and the history of Kazakhstan. The fund of the museum has more than 4,000 expositions. The exhibition has more than 1,000 archaeological findings.
After opening, the museum already had a solid collection of unique expositions. There were findings of Kazakh archeologists - metalwork manufacture, glass, ceramics, bones, weapons, tools, household items and jewelries, including gold and silver that gained from scientific research of archaeological monuments - ancient villages, towns and barrows .
Thus, the creation of the Archaeological Museum is directly related to the work of several generations of Kazakh scientists, and process of the overall development of the national archaeological science. The museum was created by participation of famous Kazakh scientists as A.H.Margulan, A.N.Nusupbekov, K.A.Akishev, H.A.Alpysbaev, M.K.Kadyrbaev, A.G.Maksimova, K.A. Baipakov in order to preserve the national heritage and conduct scientific research.
Many years of the research, which was conducted by Kazakh scientists in all regions of the country, helped to gather rich unique materials that perfectly illustrate the ancient and medieval history of Kazakhstan.
"The Golden Man", which was found in the mound of Issyk, occupies a section in the central place of the museum. This unique finding of Kazakh archeologists has global significance. Issyk mound provides a rare opportunity for scientists of Kazakhstan to explore original history of ancestors - Saks, who lived in the V-IV centuries BC. Restorers reconstructed garments and made a copy of an ancient costume. Samples of the well-known "animal style" are clearly presented on the costume of the warrior.
Another well-known monument of Semirechie (V century BC) is Besshatyr cemetery, which allowed to gain interesting information about the funerary architecture and engineering facilities of mounds. The exposition of the museum is decorated with mock tomb, which made of the Tien-Shan spruce, and served as the burial chamber of one of Besshatyr mounds.
An interesting group of wares from bronzes constitute Saka and Usun boilers and censers, which found during excavations of ancient sanctuaries of Semirechie. It allows finding out religious concepts of Saks and Usuns. The era of the middle ages presents materials from the excavations of burials of the ancient Turks and cities on the Silk Road, which was on considerable distance through the territory of Kazakhstan. Original art and architecture, crafts, products from different countries show the high level of urbanization of the medieval Kazakhstan. Cities Otrar, Taraz, Turkestan, Kayalyk, Talhir and Almaty are widely known in Eurasia.
Exposition medieval hall is decorated by ancient Turkic stone sculptures, replicas of mausoleums as Aisha Bibi and Khozha Ahmed Yassaui, highly carved wood from the ceremonial hall of the Keder city of Syrdarya, remains of carved clay panels of palaces and cities Dzhamukata and Kulan in Semirechie.
Unique exhibits of the museum are successfully demonstrated at exhibition in Almaty, Zheskazgan, Turkestan, Shymkent, and Pavlodar. The exhibition - "Ancient Treasures of Kazakhstan" is regularly provided in Astana.
The Archaeological Museum celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2003. International scientific conference on the theme "The Archaeology of Kazakhstan: results and prospects" was held in the framework of the museum.
The richest collection, unique exhibits of the museum always attract the largest exhibition grounds of the world. Archaeological Museum has held numerous exhibitions in almost all continents of the world, and they all received the highest ratings.
At present time, the museum conducts research work, and exposition funds are replenished annually. Reexposition is regularly conducted, and makes new stands and exhibits. The tour guide is always ready to make sightseeing tours in Kazakh, Russian and English languages.
