Kazakh folk musical instruments museum was found in 1980. As well as similar establishments which are engaged in collecting and storing of historical monuments and works of art, it is a calling card of Almaty, one of its cultural sights. The building of the museum is also a historical and architectural monument of Kazakhstan. It is a sample of wooden architecture of the public buildings of Verniy in early twentieth century, built in 1908, by the famous architect Zenkov A.P.

It was carried out a large-scale reconstruction in 2012 within the Year of culture. At the moment, not only the appearance but also the location of expositions completely changed the concept of the work. The museum opened after reconstruction on May 15, 2013. Today “new eternal values exposition" represents a unique collection of ancient Kazakh musical instruments from all regions of Kazakhstan, musical instruments of the CIS countries and the world (more than 1000 depositary items which are divided into 60 types of instruments).

The collection also includes instruments which belonged to famous Kazakh singers – improvisers and composers.

There is displayed personal dombra of the poets, zhiraus and composers in the museum's exposition – such as Abay, Zhambyl, Makhambet, Amre Kashaubayev, Dina Nurpeisova, Nurgisa Tlendiyev and other outstanding figures of our musical heritage of our country. Such rare instruments as zhetygen adyrna, sazgen, tokildak are revealed as a result of scientific research from the traces of folk tales, written sources and restored according to ethnographic description by national craftsmen.

Today the museum of folk musical instruments is an authoritative scientific centre. Its employees are engaged in conducting research, searching, introducing unknown and forgotten musical names or non-attributed (unkept copies) works to the scientific and cultural use. Seven exposition halls are open for visitors: hall of archaeology, percussion and wind instruments, hall of memorial musical instruments, hall of string instruments such as the dombra and kobyz, halls of the world musical instruments, hall of temporary exhibitions and presentations, concert hall.

For all guests, the museum is presented an interactive multimedia system Media table, where you can get full information about traditions, customs and a way of life of Kazakh people. There also works the workshop of handicraftsman in the Museum, where you can visually see the manufacturing technology of national musical instruments. The national souvenirs from the souvenir shops are under exceptional high demand. The playing room Kinnekt caused genuine interest where everyone can become a conductor of his own orchestra! Concert and temporary expositions halls are open for all comers. The Museum also offers premises for carrying out corporate concerts, seminars, training, master classes.
