East Kazakhstan regional architectural and ethnographic Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a truly unique cultural and scientific institution not only within the borders of the Republic of Kazakhstan but also the entire post-Soviet space. Suffice to say that the museum brings together a range of a number of historical buildings, cultural sites and institutions. All of them are under the unified leadership and fulfill the main mission of the museum - a comprehensive, interdisciplinary study of the traditional culture of the people of East Kazakhstan, as a part of the traditional culture of the people of Kazakhstan.
The first and the only in Kazakhstan multi-Museum-Reserve was set in the East Kazakhstan region. It includes: a traditional museum - three buildings - monuments of history and architecture of the late XIX - early XX centuries; the open-air museum in the Ethnopark "Zhastar" (14 monuments of folk architecture); children's park; leisure and rest park named after Zhambyl, left bank complex, spread out on the territory of more than 100 hectares, the ethnographic complex with 16 estates of people living in EKR; military complex; Zoo; Botanical Park; City of masters; family vacation area "Blue Lakes"; Park "Silk Road". All of these cultural institutions are well known among the citizens and guests of the region, they are happy to spend free time here relaxing and getting acquainted with the history and culture of Kazakhstani nations living on the territory of the East Kazakhstan. At present, the museum contains a unique collection consisting of more than 60,000 artifacts reflecting the life and culture of 40 nations living in the area. The incomparable museum-reserve became the center of various cultural events and exhibitions of both Kazakh and International, exhibitions of Korea, China, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, Poland, India, Iran, Israel, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan have been held here up to date.
The mastermind, the creator of the museum and its permanent director is the Honored Worker of Culture of the Kazakh SSR, Member of the National Committee of ICOM Kazakhstan N.A. Zaitsev. For his enormous contribution to Kazakhstan’s cultural development, N.A. Zaitsev was decorated with an Order of "Kurmet", "Parasat"; medals: "10 years anniversary of Constitution of Kazakhstan ", "20 years of Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan." He also was given diplomas of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Minister of Culture, Ministry of Culture, Information and Public Accord of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
East Kazakhstan regional architectural and ethnographic Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve has its own fascinating history of establishment. It starts back in 1968, when a museum at the eight-year school was opened in a small village Butakov. Until May 1971 it had been a school museum, and with this its exposure collected unique items reflecting the history and culture of the region. On May 7, 1971, the museum was given the status - Butakov folk museum. Zaitsev N.A. was appointed the Director of National Museum of Ethnography. Since January 1972, Butakov museum becomes a subsidiary of Leninogorsk museum. Considering the rarity of Butakov ethnographic museum’s collected monuments of material and spiritual culture, on March 19, 1976 the museum was reorganized into Butakov ethnographic open-air museum. In the future the status of the museum raised and from July 1, 1978, it became the regional ethnographic open air museum. In 2005, the East Kazakhstan regional ethnographic museum acquired the status of museum-reserve and multi-agency. This decision was made due to the fact that the museum had come from the scope of ethnographic, and expanded its profile and thematic range of its activities. Its exposure began to encompass such areas as history, nature and architecture. The museum was given a zoo, and two parks where open air exhibition was, and natural landscape zones, including rare and cultural species of plants, were created in the territory of the reconstructed parks. Currently, the museum holds great scientific, cultural and educational activities, exhibits, excursion programs for different target audiences.

The years of exile connect Dostoyevski (1854-59) with Semipalatinsk. In 1854 an exiled convict petrashevets F. M. Dostoevski finished the term of penal servitude in Omsk jail was taken to the ranks in Seventh Siberian line battalion in Semipalatinsk.
The museum of the famous Kazakh poet Kokbai Zhanataev is situated in the area Takyr of the East Kazakhstan region. The museum was opened in the mosque-medrese in 1997 and it is a branch of the National Park Museum of Abay.
