Republican Museum of Sports and Olympic glory is located in one of the oldest buildings in Almaty. The house stands in the center of Almaty over 160 years. It was built in the middle of the XIX century. Throughout the years, there were: the widow's house of Colonel Sapozhnikov, then - gardener Tatarinov, sanitary and epidemiological station and finally Republican museum of sports and Olympic glory. The museum building is an architectural monument of the XIX century, and it is taken under state protection.
Museum of Sports and Olympic glory was opened in 2000. One of the important events in history of the whole Kazakhstan was the opening of the museum, where attended the President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The idea of creating such museum in Kazakhstan was announced after the meeting of Nursultan Nazarbayev with the President of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch, which was held in 1997.
The exposition of the museum was formed by expositions of working sport museum, which was located in the main building of KazGAST. In the 60s of the last century, the honored coach of the Soviet Union in Greco-Roman wrestling Peter Philippovich Matuschak began to collect the artifacts of Olympic history. In those years, he headed the Department of struggle at the Kazakh State Institute of Physical Culture. This collection was formed on the basis of the museum.
Committee for Sport and Physical Education, NOC RK, sports and voluntary societies CSKA and "Dynamo", Sport federations helped to form the museum.
The exposition of the museum is located in seven halls, including sovereign halls of Kazakhstan, World Champions, European and Asian Games, healthy lifestyle, champions and winners of the Olympic Games and national sports.
According to the staff of the museum, the most valuable exhibits are personal belongings and awards of the great Kazakhstan sportsmen. The museum's collection has: fighting gloves and a belt of one of the best boxers in the world Serik Konakbaev, wrestling tights and champion of the XXII Olympic Games Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov, T-shirt of famous athlete in the world and the first Kazakhstan winner of Olympic silver medal Guzman Kossanov, gold medals and trophies of Olympic champion games, world, Asia and the Asian Games of Basili Zhirov (boxing).
Central part of the museum is reserved for the Cup of Barker, which V.Zhirov won at the Olympic Games in Atlanta (USA) for the best boxer of the Olympic cycle. Currently, the Cup of Barker is kept at the Museum of the President of Kazakhstan.
Huge interest is taken by hall of national sports. It tells in detail about the history and competitions of such species as bayga, kazahsha kures, togyz-kumalak and others.
The museum exhibits trophies, medals, photographs and other curiosities of Kazakhstan sportsmen, who won at the World Championships, European and major international tournaments.
A central place in the museum is occupied by interesting photos on theme "the uncrowned champions". Here are photos and stories about the life of sportsmen, who have achieved outstanding results, but did not win any Olympic medal. There are also names of multiple world record holders in weightlifting Stepan Ulyanov, USSR champion in freestyle wrestling Amangeldi Gabsattarov, champion and record holder of the Union Athletics Amin Tuyakov, one of the strongest freestyle wrestler in the world Abilseit Ayhanov, a master of kickboxing Sabyrzhan Makhmetov, two-time champion on boxing of the USSR Abdrashit Abdrahmanov and the best football player Timur Segizbaev.
The museum's collection is constantly updated with new exhibits. Sportsmen win awards in every major sport events, and most of them give it to the museum. The staff of the museum is always happy and ready to tell visitors about the most significant sport achievements of Kazakhstan.
