The museum of history of Almaty was opened in September 2002. Themuseum, which did not have address and moved from the building to building, was kept by worker’s enthusiasm for a long time.They carried active work in collection of archeological and documental materials.

Nowadays the exposition of the museum is situated on the area of 200 square m and makes up more than 35 thousand pieces. The museum discloses history of the town and peculiarities of people’s life in the period of ancient time that is to say Bronze Age up to now. The base of the expositionis: collection of fine arts works, presented with works of artists S. Kalmykov, N. Soloviyev, M. Yerzhanov, M. Nyrlybayev, A. Utkin, unique collections of Kazakh ethnography also of ethnography of people’s representatives of peoples living in Almaty now, collections of everyday life items from different epochs and cultures, numismatics, photo and documents. 

The museum fund is divided into several sections. The first section,  archeology section shows history of the town in Scythians period (2500 years ago), when Almaty became one of the main political and scared centers of all Scythian world, the period of Turkic ruling and middle ages before XIV century. There are interesting exhibits such as bronze cauldrons of Scythian period in V-III cс. B.C.The section of archeology shows everyday life, culture, religious views, burial constructions and cult architecture of the ancient world.

Expositionof "Zhetysu and Almaty region inXVc. And the  first half of XXc." Section shows history of the formation of Kazakh khanate; Struggle of Kazakh people against Dzungar conquerors in Zhetisu also the period of Vernyi.There are historical materials about development of architecture, trade, culture, industry inVernyi.Visitors’ interest is aroused by the collection of Kazakh ethnography and jewelry, a letter with autograph of the general-governor of Semirechiye region G. Kolpakovski, items of town everyday life saying about the far past.

Visitors of the section of architecture inVernyi see the formation of planning structure of the town, variety of styles peculiar to the town architecture of the end of XIX – beginning of XX century, nature disasters threatening the existence of thetown. Unique chapters of photo chronicles of Vernyi, photographed by the master of photos, A. Leibin personal belongings of the outstanding engineer A. P. Zenkov, the founder of a new course in the development of building science in Zhetisu, which is seismic-resistant building undoubtedly will arouse visitors’ interest.
Materialsin"Almaty starting from 1929 up to now" show development of Almaty as the capital of Kaz SSR starting from 1929 and its further formation as political, cultural-economic and administrational center of Kazakhstan.  There is a colorful photographs exhibition devoted to modern Almaty as a cultural and financial center of Kazakhstan. The exposition is permanently supplemented. Original things and photo materials about history of Almaty ZOO, the Committee of national security of the Republic of Kazakhstan, materials about Asiada-11 also materials about geology, history of Puppet theatre.

Unique archeological park"Boralday burial grounds"consisting of 47 Scythian and Uisun burial grounds situated on the territory with the area of 430 ha on north-west Almaty are included in the museum besides the main building and fund.  The monument which preserved cultural and nature landscape presents the dynasty tsarist burial complex. It avoided build-up and destructions and nowadays it is the only monument of the early Iron Age in the town line. 

The museum makes and prepares scientific materials, organizesexhibitionsincludingtheabroad: the Russian Federation, Ukraine, People’s Republic of Korea, Germany, France, Turkey. There are thematic exhibitions such as  «Real son of nature» by the 115^th anniversary from the birthday of people’s writer of Kazakhstan Maksim DmitriyevichZverev, «Almaty: history and modernity» by the 85^th anniversary of moving the capital to Almaty, «Almaty in artists’ works of Kazakhstan», «Nature of Zhetisu», «Archeological monuments of Almaty».
