Mangystau Regional Musical Drama Theatre is the newest theatre in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The opening ceremony of the theatre was on March 2003, where the President Nursultan Nazarbayev attended and cut the traditional ribbon. A creative life of the theatre started with premiere "Kyz Zhibek" based on the Kazakh classic literature by Gabit Musrepov. Mainly young artists formed the troupe of the theatre. 30 graduates of the Kazakh National Academy of Arts named after T.Zhurgenov arrived to work in the theatre. Director Gulsina Mergalieva led the theatre group. After opening, the theatre immediately received the name in honor of the outstanding Kazakh actor and modern director N. Zhanturin.
Today, the repertoire has dozens of successful performances, among which are world classics, such as Shakespeare and Moliere, and Kazakh folk writers. The most notable theatrical performances were: "Kyz Zhibek" by G.Musrepov, "Tomiris", "Mahambet", "Akbobek", "Romeo and Juliet", "Looking For You", "Kelinder koterilisi", "Married idyll", "Aldar Kose" and "Aladdin".
Mangystau theatre is the youngest theatre in Kazakhstan. Despite 10 years of work, the creative team of the theatre participated in the eight festivals and won three Grand Prix.
In 2012, the director of Mangystau regional theatre Gulsina Mirgalieva was awarded the prize for the best director's decision (the play “Zіlzala”) among 13 leading theatres of the country on the ХХ Republican theatre festival in Uralsk, which was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the famous Kazakh director, "Halyk Kakharmany" - Azerbaizhan Mambetov. Two works were taken for performance, one of which was devoted to the event on 11 March 2011, occurred in Japan - tsunami. According to the opinion of the director, this work was highly praised due to novelty.
In 2013, the theatre celebrated ten years in a program of events, which was dedicated to this date. There were contests for the best picture, the best material for journalists, competition-mushayra among akyns, and scientific conference with participation of Deputy Governor - Khalila Nurgaliyeva. Professors of the Kazakh National Academy of Arts after T.Zhurgenov - Bakyt Nurpeis, Aubakir Rakhimov, Saniya Kabdieva, writer and critic Ashirbek Sygay, secretary of the Union of Theatrical Art Meruert Zhaksylykova, chief expert of the Ministry of Culture and Information Gulnafis Myrzasheva, director of the West Kazakhstan Drama Theatre Kuzhergali Tuleushev participated at the meeting.
Mangystau Drama Theatre has a small hall with 200 seats and a concert hall with 680 seats. Theatre houses the building of ex-cinema that underwent thorough renovation. History of the theatre is unique, and it is associated with an initiative proposes of the President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The first congress of youth was with participation of President Nursultan Nazarbayev on October 2001 in Aktau. The question about opening a theatre in Aktau was raised at this congress. The President instructed the head of the region L.Kiinov to build a theatre. Leaders of the region reacted seriously to the instruction, and they decided to rebuild theatre on the place of the cinema. Building was built at the end of 2002. The theatre opened curtain for audiences on March 2003.
Today, a unique project of the new theatre is ready to be built on the shores of the Caspian Sea. The new building will be equipped with two halls, an amphitheater with 1 500 seats and all attendant services, shops, restaurants and hotel. It will be modern and large theatre complex, which Kazakhstan does not have such analogue at the present day.
