Zhambyl regional local history museum was opened in 1931. From the beginning it had the status of a city museum, and then in the late 40s, the museum was given the status of the regional local history. Over the years collection of the museum was refilled from various sources. Basically, there were exhibits from archaeological expeditions of the Kazakhstan scientists, as well as replenishment of fund was due to the active participation of the urban community.
The most valuable exhibits of the museum were originally: collections of archaeology, numismatics, ethnography, documents and photographs. The scientific description and dating of archaeological objects were carried out then still by the young scientist M.E.Masson. A famous archaeologist of Kazakhstan, a candidate of historical science G.I.Patsevich participated in the organizational work of the museum. There are three scientific departments in the regional museum: the fund department, the history department, archaeology and ethnography, the history department of modern society. Since 1980, the exhibition hall, area of 303 sq m operates as the department of the museum. In 1978 to the regional museum was given the 3-storey building in the centre of the city – on Dostyk Square. The museum took an active part in the expedition works, which have dug out ancient settlements and cultural monuments such as Tekturmas, Bai-Tobe Kurgan, Yani-Kurgan. The archaeological expeditions, led by the museum employee A.P.Popov, made excavations of ancient Taraz baths of lX-Xll centuries. As a result of archaeological research, the amount of the exhibits was considerably increased.
Currently the fund of the museum includes 35000 depositary items. In 2002, for the 2000 anniversary of Taraz, the museum has been completely renovated, opened 3 new pavilions such as: “The museum of the ancient Turkic writing and ancient Turkic stone statues", “The history museum of Taraz -2000", “Art museum of L.V. Bryumer". The total exhibition area of a modern museum complex is almost 2000 sq metres.
The exposition of the museum is divided into departments. The collection of labour stone tools, found in Karatau mountain by the professor Alpysbayev Kh.A, are shown in the department of archaeology; human remains; bronze sickle; finds of Saka period: the figures from the altars, arrowheads and copies, a bronze helmet of the warrior. By the way, there was found only three similar helmets in the CIS territory one of which was discovered in the territory of Zhambyl region.

The pride of the museum is “The museum of the ancient Turkic writing and stone statues". The stone statues of this museum appear as close to its natural location, come to life, telling stories about the ancient tribes and peoples. The third new pavilion of the museum complex is art.
