Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan is one of the biggest museums in Central Asia. It is located in Almaty, Samal district – 1, 44. Creation of its collections was founded in 30-s of XIX century in Orenburg, where “Museum of Orenburg territory” was organized in Nepluyev military school. In following years the collections of museums of Semirechensk regional, Cossack force and republican antireligious joined the fund of the museum. In 1931, the museum was opened in the building of the former cathedral in Alma-ata. The modern building of the museum was constructed in 1985 as per the design of U.Ratushnyi, Z.Musrafina and B.Rzagaliyev. By rights, it is considered to be one of the best buildings of modern architecture of our city.  

The total area of the museum’s building is 17 557 sq.m. Exhibition galleries and four exposition halls are placed on its three floors. The fund and expositional collection have about 300 thousand units. The first exposition hall - the hall of paleontology and archeology – presents unique original exponents from the funds of the CSM, collected by scholars-paleontologists and archeologists in the expedition stuff, who researched the most ancient layers and settlements on the whole territory of the republic in different time. The collection numbers about 6000 units of keeping, demonstrated by two sections – paleobotany and paleozoology, temporal diapason of which from 520 million years ago before modernity, i.e. from Cambrian period to Holocene age.  The peculiarity of this collection is the genuineness of the exponents and their specific multiplicity.
Archeological collection of the museum consists of artifacts of the epochs of the first nomads – sarmats, sarmats and nomads of Middle Ages. The collection of Nestorian stones with Turkic-Syrian inscriptions, witnessing about existence of Christianity on the territory of Zhetisu in XIII-XIV cc., is of interest. Big and interesting collection of bronze kettles, altars and lamps, domestic objects and equipments is gathered in the museum. Many domestic objects, equipments and decorations of Saks are made in so called Scythian – saka “animal style” art.

Treasures of special pantry – ancient gold of Chilikty, the second Pokrovsky mound, Zhalaulinsk buried treasure, jewelry from the entombment of a shaman in Kargaly and the silverware of III c B.C. – IX c. A.D. are the pride of the archeological collection of CSM of RK.  
 
The second exposition hall is dedicated to history, comprising the period of time from XV c., the period of the formation of the first Kazakh khanate, and to the beginning of the XX c. The objects of mode of life and national-applied arts, wide circle of the materials of photo-documentary and graphic character, belonging to the pre revolutionary period are presented here.
 
The main part of the exposition of the next hall consists of the sections, enlightening the materials on history and ethnography of nations, inhabiting the territory of Kazakhstan in present time. The history, today’s life of Russians, Koreans, Ukrainians, Uigurs, Jewish people and others, are the main theme of the exposition of the third hall. The other part of the hall is dedicated to the period of the Great Patriotic War.
 
The fourth exposition hall of the museum demonstrates the materials on the new history of the Republic of Kazakhstan (1991-1998): the materials characterizing the modern condition of economics and politics, development of science and culture of the republic. Moreover a part of the exposition keeps the President’s gifts from heads of states.
 
Aside from the exposition halls, the museum has large premises and galleries for holding temporal exhibitions. More than 200 thousand exponents of permanent keeping, the tenth part of which is presented in the permanent exposition, are preserved in the funds of the CSM of RK for today. A part of the collection is periodically exposed in thematic exhibitions, or, by special orders, excursions for groups and individuals are hold in separate funds.    
The museum issues compilations of articles and scientific works, dedicated to the problems of the History of Kazakhstan and museology.
