Ethno-memorial complex "Map of Kazakhstan "Atameken" was opened on 8 September 2001 by initiative of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev.

The main purpose of creation of the ethnocomplex "Atameken" is to ensure the safety, accessibility and inclusion population to the historical, cultural and spiritual values, and to promote achievements of the Kazakh culture, colorful reflection of natural areas and economic achievements of Kazakhstan, the preservation and enhancement of cultural values.

According to translation from Turkic languages, "Atameken" can be translated as "Land of Ancestors". An amazing open-air museum gives a unique opportunity to visitors to walk around all Kazakhstan in a few hours, and to get acquainted with all regions, landmarks and natural landscapes. Kazakhstan is the 9th largest country in the world (by land area). Here, visitors can see the entire country as in the palm.

This enjoyable way of showing the history of cities, countries and nations is popular in many countries: Austria, Belgium, Britain, Germany, Switzerland and others. There are about 20 such complexes. Atameken was built by analogy with foreign parks, and it is one of the most unique park among parks of the world. "Map of Kazakhstan "Atameken" became the only one in the world, which presents not only the socio-cultural and industrial facilities, but also the landscape, flora and fauna of Kazakhstan.

Visitors can see the country on the square 1,7ga (two football fields) as in a palm, and get acquainted with architectural and landscape history. There are 14 regions and 2 cities with republican status - Astana and Almaty on the map. Here is shown all different climatic zones and landscapes, architecture and urban ensembles. The most important - historical and cultural monuments: the Mausoleum of Kozha Ahmed Yassaui and Bukhtarminsky HPS, Presidential Residence and Karagiya valley. An interesting part of the map of Kazakhstan "Atameken" is a decorative model of the Caspian Sea. More than 200 miniatures and attractions are located in the park and their number gradually increases.

There is an open forum with arena in the center of the park, where provides holidays, meetings and other public events. In addition, here are craft shops where visitors can buy products of craftsmen, souvenirs from various regions of Kazakhstan.

From the first day after opening, "Atameken" became one of the main attractions in Astana. More than 10,000 visitors from foreign countries visit the complex every year.

Work on the "map" can not be completed, because of Kazakhstan lives and develops, and new objects can be placed here. It has a special historical optimism - there is not disappeared any object during its existence, and in contrast it is replenished continuously. It is planned to conduct a large-scale reconstruction of the complex in the near future, and to open a new pavilion which will be dedicated to the international exhibition EXPO-2017.
